Today (December 3, 2016), the AFS Greater LA Scholarship Team held a workshop in downtown LA to help a group of low-income high school students start their applications for the adventure of their lifetimes: studying abroad for a summer, semester or year with AFS. The 27 students that attended the event today come from Los Angeles Leadership Academy, Raymond C. Cortines School of Visual and Performing Arts, Washington Preparatory HS and Marshall HS.
Our fierce leader, Barbara Hensleigh, Joe Andrews and Tim McNeal, organized the session. We had the honor to have AFS USA Scholarships Manager, Laszlo Fejos, at our event. We helped students begin their applications for financial aid and for their study abroad experience.
An important part of the workshop was getting students to start fundraising early to help the Scholarships Team and to save money for their everyday expenses while abroad.
Darin Smith-Gadis and Anna Schniepp gave an excellent fundraising presentation. AFS Greater LA Scholarship alumnus, Yosmar Jaime, was the official Spanish-English interpreter. Lizbeth Sierra, Laila Hualpa and Joe Andrews (and all the volunteers above) helped with applications and interpreting.
Great turnout! So excited for all these wonderful students!
